A good place to start would probably be to post details of your problem to
a newsgroup supporting those running XP rather than one supporting those
using the older Windows Millennium (windowsme) operating system. However
...

You say you cannot use either your CD or DVD reader (writer). What do you
see when you check in the Device Manager? Right click, My Computer |
Properties | Hardware | Device Manager. Do you see both of the drives
listed under DVD/CD-ROM drives (click the + to expand)? If yes, check the
Properties for each drive, what does it say for Device Status on the
General tab? If the drives are not listed in the Device Manager then it
is possible that they are not being recognised for some reason by the
system bios or even that you have moved the PC and either their data or
power cable has become dislodged.
